If they practice the secrets exposed in your book, shouldn't be staying in great shape all the time instead of having to work at losing fat prior to every competitive event?"&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;ANSWER:&lt;/b&gt; Thanks for your question. There's a logical explanation for why bodybuilders and other physique athletes (fitness and figure competitors), don't remain completely ripped all year round, and it's the very reason they are able to get so ripped on the day of a contest...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You can't hold a peak forever or it's not a "peak", right? What is the definition of a peak? It's a high point surrounded by two lower points isn't it? Therefore, any shape you can stay in all year round is NOT your "peak" condition.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The intelligent approach to nutrition and training (which almost all bodybuilders  and fitness/figure competitors use), is to train and diet in a seasonal or cyclical fashion and build up to a peak, then ease off to a maintenance or growth phase.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I am NOT talking about bulking up and getting fat and out of shape every year, then dieting it all off every year. What I'm talking about is going from good shape to great shape, then easing back off to good shape.... but never getting "out of shape."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Makes a lot of sense, doesn't it?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Here's an example: I have no intentions whatsoever of walking around 365 days a year at 4% body fat like I appear in the photo on my website. Truth be told, that is day of contest condition.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Off-season (when I'm not competing), my body fat is usually between 8 - 10%. Mind you, that's very lean and still single digit body fat, I don't stray too far from competition shape, but I don't maintain contest shape all the time. It takes me about 10-12 weeks or so to gradually drop from 9% to 3.5%-4.0% body fat to "peak" for competition with NO loss of lean body mass, using the same techniques I reveal in my e-book.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It would be almost impossible to maintain 4% body fat, and even if I could, why would I want to? For the few weeks prior to competition I'm so depleted, ripped, and even "drawn" in the face, that complete strangers walk up and offer to feed me.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Okay, so I'm just kidding about that, but let's just say being "being ripped to shreds" isn't a desirable condition to maintain because it takes such a monumental effort to stay there.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It's probably not even healthy to try forcing yourself to hold extreme low body fat. Unless you're a natural "ectomorph" (skinny, fast metabolism body type), your body will fight you and you'll always be hungry.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Not only that, anabolic hormones may drop and sometimes your immune system is affected as well (and I hate to say this, but sometimes - for some people - even the, uh... "reproductive functions"... decline a bit when you're that lean).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Hey, I'm just being honest. It's just not "normal" to walk around all the time with literally NO subcutaneous body fat.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Instead of attempting to hold the peak, I cycle back into a less demanding off-season program and avoid creeping beyond 9.9% body fat. Some years I've stayed leaner - like 6-7%, (which takes effort), especially when I knew I would be photographed, but I don't let my body fat go over 10%. Thats "the line" I draw - it's like a personal "rule" for me.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This practice isn't just restricted to bodybuilders. Athletes in all sports use periodization to build themselves up to their best shape for competition.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Is a pro football player in the same condition in March-April as he is in August-September? Probably not. Many show up fat and out of shape (relatively speaking) for training camp, others just need fine tuning, but none are in peak form... that's why they have training camp!!!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There's another reason you wouldn't want to maintain a "ripped to shreds" physique all year round - you'd have to be dieting (calorie restricted) all the time. And this is one of the reasons that 95% of people can't lose weight and keep it off - they are CHRONIC dieters... always on some type of diet. Know anyone like that?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You can't stay on restricted low calories indefinitely. Sooner or later your metabolism slows down and you plateau as your body adapts to the chronically lowered food intake and reduced body weight.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But if you diet for fat loss and push incredibly hard for 3 months, then ease off for a while and eat a little more (healthy food, not "pigging out"), your metabolic rate is re-stimulated.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In a few weeks or months, you can return to another fat loss phase and reach an even lower body fat level, until you finally reach the point that's your happy maintenance level for life - a level that is healthy and realistic - as well as visually appealing.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;That's how we physique athletes do it...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Bodybuilders have discovered a methodology for losing fat that's so effective, it puts them in complete control of their body composition. They've mastered  this area of their lives and will never have to worry about it again.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If they ever "slip" and fall off the wagon like all humans do at times ... no problem! They know how to get back into shape fast.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Bodybuilders have the tools and knowledge to hold a low body fat all year round(such as 9% for men, or about 15% for women), and then at a whim, to reach a temporary "peak" of extremely low body fat for the purpose of competition.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Maybe most important of all, they have the power and control to slowly ease back from peak shape into maintenance, and not balloon up and yo-yo like most conventional dieters.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What if you had the power to stay lean all year round, and then get super lean when summer rolled around, or when you took your vacation to the Caribbean, or when your wedding date was coming up?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Wouldn't you like to be in control of your body like that? While this might seem mind-boggling at first, it is not entirely surprising, when you stop to consider what American culture has become.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the early days of the republic the majority of Americans did hard labor on farms they were used to exercise during their normal workday, so they ate large meals in order to give them the energy they needed to complete their tasks. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the 19th century Americans began moving into cities to take factory jobs again they spent much of their time on their feet and jobs involved a good deal of physical labour.  Many walked to work and to school so exercise was a part of their normal routine. No need for Pilates or strength training in those days since ordinary life afforded many opportunities to exercise naturally.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Fast-forward to today and most people have sedentary jobs, working on computers, working at desks, working at cash registers. There is little opportunity during their work days to move, let alone get up and stretch.  At home, they may spend much of their time sacked out in front of a television set, or on their home computer.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;However, studies have proven that the best weight loss plan combines sensible diet with exercise. Certainly, you can reduce your calorie intake but it is also important to boost your metabolism, and that is best done through an exercise routine. Since you must burn a phenomenal amount of calories in order to lose pounds, exercise is crucial to long-term weight loss success.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But what if you don’t enjoy exercise and, lets face it very few of us actually enjoy the experience so how can you possibly start an exercise program? In a word you need &lt;b&gt;“motivation”&lt;/b&gt;, easier said than done but just picture how you want to look and feel in the future and be determined to achieve that goal. You must set yourself targets and your motivation will be to achieve those targets however small. Believe me realising your first target will drive you on to the next, then the next, and so on.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you are not used to exercise don’t start in the gym, walk, skip, jog, dance, skating, swimming, so many ways for you to exercise in an enjoyable manner.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If at all possible, you should eventually add strength training to your exercise regimen as lifting weights can boost your metabolism, causing you to burn calories while also adding muscle to your frame. Strength training can also help you to guard against osteoporosis and other health problems. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The bottom line is that in order to be a healthy person you simply need exercise as exercise does not only contribute to fitness and weight loss but also to your mind and general well being. You can have that firm tummy, lose those excess pounds and feel great in the process. How? Just by following a few simple exercises.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Excess weight will not disappear overnight and although science has developed diet pills claiming that you can lose tummy fat fast (some risky, some downright dangerous) and some diet programs claim to get you to lose “10 pounds a day” well forget these claims we are going to concentrate on regular exercise and then you will see the pounds drop off and help you lose tummy fat.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The type of exercise you choose will be determined by your current state of health and physical ability and I understand that someone hugely overweight could not easily put on their running shoes and jog a mile around the local park. So tailor your exercise routine to your current ability and gradually increase as you improve.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I must add a warning here that you must always consult with your doctor or health professional before undertaking any diet or fitness regime.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Carried out sensibly, studies show that there are no known side effects from exercising. I must stress on the word sensibly because if you do too much too quickly and without proper warm ups you will most certainly end up with muscle strain &lt;b&gt;so slowly and gently to begin with &lt;/b&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In my view the best form of exercise is group exercise, be it football, baseball, basketball or if you have passed that particular age try organised dances like line dancing. Not only is this good exercise but you will be spurred on by your fellow participants and will get the social benefits of mixing with people as well. So you lose tummy fat and get a great deal of enjoyment. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Exercise is superb because it builds person's endurance and increases the metabolism prompting one to burn more calories than before which results in tummy fat and general weight loss.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For the more active, a regular gym session involving cardio-vascular and aerobic activity will not only help you lose the tummy fat but will develop a firmer body shape. There is a multitude of great exercises but for today we shall look at the squat.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Arial;"&gt;Basic Squat – Feet shoulder width apart and sit back as if you were going to sit on a bench and then use your legs and butt to come back up to a standing position.&amp;nbsp; (Forward and Back)&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Arial;"&gt;Side Squat – Perform the same squatting movement but now step out to the side, alternating left and right, with each squat. (Side to Side)&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Arial;"&gt;Sumo Walk Squat – Go down into a squat position and walk forward and back like a sumo wrestler would. (Rotation)&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Arial;"&gt;As you can see, this will take A LOT more muscles than just a plain old leg press and give you much, much better results.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Arial;"&gt;Before starting any exercises routine make sue you have properly warmed up and taken sufficient liquid on board. Do as many reps as you are comfortable with but aim to increase on the number of reps each week. Half the comedy in the world is predicated on the paunch.  At that, the human race is divided into but two classes--fat people who are trying to get thin and thin people who are trying to get fat.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Fat, the doctors say, is fatal.  I move to amend by striking out the last two letters of the indictment.  Fat is fat.  It isn't any more fatal to be reasonably fat than to be reasonably thin, but it's a darned sight more uncomfortable.  So far as being unreasonably thin or unreasonably fat is concerned, I suppose the thin person has the long end of it.  I never was thin, so I don't know.  However, I have been fat--notice that "have been"? To get the stomach you want, you will need to take a rounded approach, involving cardio exercise, gym-work and, of course, a healthy, balanced diet."&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 11pt;"&gt;Cut out stress&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 11pt;"&gt;There are many obstacles standing in the way of you and that perfectly sculpted midriff - poor diet and lack of exercise being the most obvious. But did you know that stress is also a major contributing factor?&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 11pt;"&gt;Trainer Paul Huntingford (&lt;a href="http://www.studiog14.co.uk/"&gt;www.studiog14.co.uk&lt;/a&gt;) explains: "Too much stress at work or at home can play havoc with your hormone levels, making it very difficult to lose abdominal fat. This is not easy to control, but do your best to cut some stress out of your life and you will notice a big difference."&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 11pt;"&gt;Train smart&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 11pt;"&gt;Another pitfall to avoid is ineffective training. You could spend hours in the gym doing the exercises you think are beneficial to your stomach and the rest of your physique, only to find out the effort you put in is not matched by the results.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div class="abs"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 11pt;"&gt;Ensure the results to achieve match the effort you put in by speaking to a personal trainer and keeping your workouts varied.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 11pt;"&gt;Walsh says: "Any man can start strength training along with high intensity cardio and they will lose some fat and see the beginnings of a flat stomach, but to get the perfect six-pack requires careful planning."&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 11pt;"&gt;Talk to a trainer before you hit the gym, make sure you vary your workouts and, most importantly, stick to your training plan.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 11pt;"&gt;Eat clean&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 11pt;"&gt;Exercise all you want, but the ripped stomach won't make an appearance unless you address your nutritional needs at the same time. Remember, you can't out train a poor diet, so commit to making the necessary changes before you start training.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 11pt;"&gt;Walsh explains: "Eat less starchy carbs such as pasta and potatoes and more protein, such as lean cuts of meat and fish. A balance of 33% carbs, 33% protein and 33% healthy fats such as olive oil and oily fish works well for getting you lean. Basically, if you want that flat stomach, the junk has to go."&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 11pt;"&gt;Stay off the booze&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 11pt;"&gt;Easier said than done, we know, but with the festive season out of the way now is the perfect time to give up or cut down your alcohol intake and see the benefits in the bedroom mirror.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div class="abs"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 11pt;"&gt;There's no way around it, if you want a flatter stomach you're going to have to put down that pint.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 11pt;"&gt;Huntingford says: "Empty calories are definitely not wanted if you're after that washboard stomach. Alcohol is full of sugar, and reduces fat metabolism by up to 30% which means you will have to train even harder to burn off the extra calories."&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 11pt;"&gt;What to do in the gym&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 11pt;"&gt;To get that body fat percentage down, you will need to burn fat, and this means a mixture of strength training and high-intensity interval training, as these get the heart rate up and promote lean muscle growth. Once you become familiar with these, you can start to introduce a few stomach exercises.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 11pt;"&gt;Walsh says: "The moves that will strengthen and tone your abs include the plank, leg raises, crunches, overhead squats and jack knives on the Swiss ball. If you are unsure about any of these, ask a trainer in your gym."&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 11pt;"&gt;Keep things interesting&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 11pt;"&gt;Even the most hardened gym-bunny gets bored of staring at the same four walls after a while.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 11pt;"&gt;To avoid gym-fatigue, make sure your fitness plan makes time for sessions doing the sports you love - especially if they of a high-intensity nature like football, basketball or squash. These raise your heart rate and speed up your metabolism for hours after the session.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div class="abs"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 11pt;"&gt;Playing a high-intensity sport like basketball is a great way to raise your heart rate and speed up your metabolism.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 11pt;"&gt;You should also try to mimic the sportsmen with the abs you covet the most, such as surfers. Huntingford says: "Surfers are widely regarded to have among the best abs, and though not many of us live near the beach, you could try swimming as this a fantastic trunk exercise as the water provides ideal, low-impact resistance."&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 11pt;"&gt;Pinch an inch&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 11pt;"&gt;Unless you have a lot of weight to lose, then there is little point in weighing yourself throughout this journey. If anything, you might actually gain weight due to the extra muscle you are packing on. A more effective barometer of your progress is your body fat percentage, which is basically a measurement of the total fat on your body.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 11pt;"&gt;The lower it gets, the more impressive your stomach will be. There are a number of online tools to help you gauge your current level of body fat, or you can ask your GP. Keep checking it regularly; your six-pack should begin to appear at around 10%.
